They all call the Sunshine State home, have roots in Florida and are just some of the musical artists topping the charts internationally who will be featured in Follow That Dream: Florida's Rock & Roll Legends that runs through April 28 at the Orange County Regional History Center in downtown Orlando. From the bands and performers who made history here - Elvis filming Follow that Dream in Central Florida in the early 60s; to the ones who got their start here - the Allman Brothers Band in Jacksonville, the Backstreet Boys in Orlando; to those native Floridians who grew up here - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Gainesville - Florida's Rock & Roll Legends chronicles rock & roll history since the early 1950s. Screaming fans trying to get near their favorite rock legends don't have to be in a frenzy, because a close look at more than 400 rare items is guaranteed. Included are Elvis Presley's jacket, one of Bo Diddley's homemade rectangular guitars, Ray Charles' signature shades, and a keyboard from The Allman Brothers Band and other impressive memorabilia. In this historical tribute, Florida's Rock & Roll Legends' story line follows the roots of early R&B and soul acts; the arrival of Elvis in Florida; the folk-rock era; the birth of "garage bands," the "Southern rock" phenomenon; the emergence of disco and jazz-rock fusion; the crossover Latin-Pop Sound; the African-Caribbean Worldbeat; rap groups of the 1980s; and the 1990s explosion of commercial pop acts…there's something for every music enthusiast in this special exhibit which covers over 3,200 square feet of gallery space! Brought to the History Center from the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee, an eclectic display of stage costumes, instruments, gold records, lobby posters, artwork, photographs, yearbooks and even Jim Morrison's door from a Tallahassee rental house pays homage to fifty years of rock and roll in Florida. This impressive special exhibit was created with the help of an Advisory Board comprised of an impressive list of musicians and industry people, including Butch Trucks, Tom Dowd, Jimmy Buffett, Bo Diddley, Gloria Estefan, and Ray Charles.
