All great choices so far.

Let me be the first to say:

Grace Slick

as well as:

Grace Potter

Even though she is still a relative youngster, she's doing just fine so far...

I would have written Chrissie Hynde in CAPS if she had not been mentioned...

The Wilson sisters
Pat Benatar
Janis Joplin
Stevie Nicks
Melissa Etheridge and now, Grace Potter!!!

I see other names who I think are women with great voices like Etta, Susan and Linda Ronstatd, but they don't stick primarily to rock material, so I wouldn't include them in the list.

Saw Ann and Joan last Saturday at 2 different concerts at the NY State Fair, both sounded amazing in their own right.

For bluesy rock of course, nobody touches Susan

What about Donna Jean Godchaux? She had her moments onstage in 1972 and 1973.

Two of my "below the radar favorites" are Annie Haslam from Renaissance and Lindy Perry (four non blondes and solo).

Already mentioned, definitely the 3 best IMO - Janis, Chrissie and Grace. Thanks to pixielf for bringing up Genya Raven, certainly ranks up there. Although she's a wreck, one helluva singer - Amy Winehouse. Not in the rock category but my favorite female singer - Anita Baker.

Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde)

Those first few albums are awesome. I think many would be suprised.

Edie Brickell

Not completely sold on her but they played the Blues fest here last year and I was really suprised by how much jamming they did. Caught me off guard. She was alright but the band was great.

Sam Brown is another singer I like. The April Moon album is real strong.
