He is a true artist in my opinion. And a true original.

And if you are into him, do you prefer the early period be boppin, finger snappin, wise crackin, gravel voiced beatnick poet by way of the Bowery persona or are you into the later occasional megaphone cackling, trash can clanging percussion, Kurt Weill by way of Captain Beefheart influenced version ?

Just wonderin'...

I like Tom a lot, I have around a dozen cassettes of him. I used to torture my Daughter with him when I would take her to school. I'd say "Guess who i'm gonna play !" and she would say "Please Daddy...not Tom Waits"....LOL !

My Brother in law and Sister went to see him out of state at some club. They said he was great live.

Bone Machine, Franks Wild years, Dark Rider and Swordfishtrombones are some of my faves.

This is my all time fave song by Tom :

A great song, I love it !

"Black wings" Tom Waits

Dude we like a LOT of the same stuff.

(Tom Waits/K. Brennan)

Take an eye for an eye
Take a tooth for a tooth
Just like they say in the Bible
Never leave a trace or forget a face
Of any man at the table
When the moon is a cold chiseled dagger
Sharp enough to draw blood from a stone
He rides through your dreams on a coach
And horses and the fence posts
In the midnight look like bones

Well they've stopped trying to hold him
With mortar, stone and chain
He broke out of every prison
Boots mount the staircase
The door is flung back open
He's not there for he has risen
He's not there for he has risen

Well he once killed a man with a guitar string
He's been seen at the table with kings
Well he once saved a baby from drowning
There are those who say beneath his coat there are wings
Some say they fear him
Others admire him
Because he steals his promise
One look in his eye
Everyone denies
Ever having met him
Ever having met him

He can turn himself into a stranger
Wel lthey broke a lot of canes on his hide
he was born away in a cornfield
A fever beats in his head like a drum inside
Some say they fear him
Others admire him
Because he steals his promise
One look in his eye
Everyone denies
Ever having met him
Ever having met him

Tom Waits is a true original. I like the early stuff - "Small Change" is my favorite. The Fernwood Tonight clips are hilarious. I got to see him live once at the Tower Theater. What a show and what a talent.

Hmm. I'm wondering if there is enough interest here for a Tom Waits vine. Maybe one older persona and one newer persona show.

What do you all think. Would you be interested?

Saw Tom about two years ago up in Asheville. Great show! I'm more familar with his earlier stuff, but there's no question he's a genius. The only problem with the show I saw was inadequate PA - it seemed like he was ill-equiped to fill a theater with the kind of volume that he should have had.

He had great banter between the songs. My favorite line of the night: "it's getting really hard to find a bad cup of coffee in this country anymore, so me and the band have gone back to instant..."

Tom Waits for me was an acquired taste, very much like a great bottle of scotch. First heard of him from the Eagles version of Ol' 55. Appreciated what he was doing, songwriting but at times listening to him was difficult. But when I heard "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You" I got him big time & have been listening to him on a regular basis ever since.

"I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You" might be one of the most beautiful songs ever written, in my opinion.

Absolutely love the guy. One of my very favourite artists. I'll be seeing him for the first time in Prague on 21/7 and i can't wait. Favourite albums Blue Valentine, Bone Machine, Mule Variations and Rain Dogs. A true legend.

I love this man. He is coming to Spain in July for the first time and, of course, I will be in one of these shows and I will write about it in my blog soon.
