Simon and Garfunkle's "The Boxer"...especially when Simon sings about being so lonely that he found comfort with the whores....

James Taylor..."Fire and Rain"...when he sings "Look down upon me Jesus...." always gets to me.

I know why Taylor sang that one, but suspect that S&G drew from their own experiences too.

New York Minute - Don Henley Pulled my coat around my shoulders / took a walk down to the park / the leaves were falling all around me / groaning city in the gathering dark / on some solitary rock some desperate lover'd left his mark / it said "Baby I've changed , Please come back . " / ANd what the head makes cloudy , the heart makes very clear /the day's were so much brighter , the time that she was here / I know there's somebody somewhere to make these dark clouds disappear / but until that day I'll have to believe / I believe , I believe , / In a New York Minute , Everything can change

This one has always done it for me....
Song For Adam - Jackson Browne

Though Adam was a friend of mine, I did not know him well
He was alone in his existence, He was deep into his well
I could guess what he was laughing at, But I couldn't really tell
Now the story's told that Adam jumped, But I'm thinking that he fell

Together we went traveling, as we received the call
His destination India, and I had none at all
Well I still remember laughing, with our backs against the wall
So free of fear we never thought, that one of us might fall

I sit before my only candle, but it's so little light to find my way
Now this story unfolds before my candle
Which is shorter every hour as it reaches for the day
Well I feel just like a candle in a way
I guess I'll get there but I wouldn't say for sure

When we parted we were laughing still, as our goodbyes were said
And I never heard from him again, as each our lives we led
except for once in someone else's letter that I read
Until I head the sudden word, that a friend of mine was dead

I sit before my only candle, like a pilgrim sits beside the way
Now this journey appears before my candle
as a song that's growing fainter, the harder I play
well I fear before I am I'll fade away
But I guess I'll get there, though I wouldn't say for sure

Though Adam was a friend of mine, I did not know him long
And when I stood myself beside him, I never thought I was as strong
still it seemed he stopped his singing in the middle of his song
well I'm not the one to say I know but I'm hoping he was wrong

I'm holding out my only candle, though it's so little light to find my way
now this story's been layed beneath my candle
and it's shorter every hour as it reaches for the day
yes I feel just like a candle in a way
I hope I'll get there but I'll never pray

For me it's the Frank Zappa song, "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee" from the Joe's Garage album.

"Melissa" is one that always gets me, can't help but think of Duane everytime I hear it, even though it's not about him. Kind of an aching sadness and sorrow about it.

2 songs, both are Nuevo Flamenco solo guitar compositions.
Very haunting.

Entre Rosas y Jasmines by Chuscales
By the way, what I have read, the name Chusacles translates in English to " Guitar Cruncher". This dude can play.
Another song would be Callejon de las Canteras by Tomatito.

Turn The Page
Bob Seger

On a long and lonesome highway, east of omaha.
You can listen to the engine moaning out itís one lone song
You can think about woman, or the girl you knew the night before,
But your thoughts will soon be wandering, the way they always do.
When your riding sixteen hours and thereís nothing much to do
And you donít feel much like riding, you just wish the trip was through.
Say, here I am, on the road again. there I am, up on the stage.
Here I go, playing star again.
There I go, turn the page.
Well you walk into a restaurant, strung out from the road,
You can feel the eyes upon you as your shaking off the cold
You pretend it doesnít bother you, but you just want to explode.
Most times you canít hear em talk, other times you can.
Oh the same old cliche, as that woman on her a man
You always see my number, you donít dare make a stand.
Here I am, on the road again. there I am, up on the stage.
Here I go, playing star again.
There I go, turn the page.
Out there in the spotlight your a million miles away,
Every ounce of energy, you try and give away,
As the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play.
Later in the evening as you lie awake in bed,
With the echo from the amplifiers ringing in your head,
You smoke the days last cigarette, remembering what she said.
Now here I am, on the road again. there I am, up on the stage.
Here I go, playing star again.
There I go, turn the page.
Here I am, on the road again. there I am, up on the stage.
Ah here I go, playing star again.
There I go, there I go.

To me the ELO song Telephone Phone Line hauntingly evokes a deep sense of loss, sadness, and painfull loneliness. The last verse gets me everytime:

"O.K. so no one's answering,
Well can't you just let it ring a little longer, longer, longer,
I'll just sit tight, through the shadows of the night
Let it ring for evermore".

Oh the pathos !!
