ok so snl has more musical guests. that's about all. Mad TV's writers are way funnier than snl's IMO. SNl writes more about just weird funny situations and madtv writes more about ridiculous things in the media and culture today. That, i think is a better idea than having some restaurant that wont stop singing to you on your birthday. (snl skit) I can look to mad TV and say, finally some one else thinks what I think about that band, TV show or movie. And as for the cast, i might get some flack for this, but i think they are just as original, creative and funny as the original SNL cast. i can't say that for snl's current line-up. what do you guys think about both shows.

I'm not exactly sure if the writers are the same, but I read awhile back that the creators for both shows are the same.

I don't care for either shows anymore. Mad TV has it's occasional laughs, but no other show will ever compare to the original 75-76 cast of SNL. SNL went down hill during 2000.

I never got into Mad TV. SNL is cool because it's a 90 minute show put together in 1 week. Mad TV was ok when they started out, but I never really got into any of their recurring characters. I mean, go up to people on the street and ask them to name a character from Mad TV - I doubt many can.

SNL has had more talent in the cast consistently. I haven't seen it very much since Will Ferrell left, but how many Mad TV cast members have gone on to, well....anything?

I love MadTV - (IMHO) its much more cutting edge than current SNL and the the Mad actors are very talented. Bobby Lee, Aries Spears, Stephanie Weir, Michael McDonald. I just find the subject matter more interesting than SNL's regular oval office/cheerleader sketches (yawn). They seem to just go on and on with no amusing punchlines. Bobby Lee's charicature of a karaoke singing Kim Jong Il is hilarious. Aries Spears take on a Black Panther type chat show are just funny and very self depracating. I also much prefer the muscial guests on Mad.

Something else I've noticed, many of the mediocre snl actors end up with biggish movie parts - Will Ferrell - the only movie I thought he was OK in was Elf.

Not even "Old School?"

I think that Ferrell is very much following the Sandler formula - same character playing the same role in the same situation - this was even more true of Farley's movies, IMO. Once in a while they get the right story and right supporting cast to make it work, e.g. Kathy Bates and Fairuza Balk in Waterboy, or Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughan in Old School. So, a few stand out, but most are dross.

I agree about In Living Color. That was a great show, esp. Damon.

As far as the original question goes, gotta go with SNL - although I haven't watched it in the past few years.

I enjoyed the early SNL - Belushi era...

Been renting In Living Color DVDs from the local video store. Very funny stuff with the Wayans Brothers and Jim Carey as Fire Marshall Bill and the Fly Girls....

both suck now, although SNL is at least funny occasionally.

Back when Mad TV was first on the air, it was hilarious...but now its just a bunch of crap, for the most part.

First season of Mad Tv was alright, but its god awful after that, one the unfunniest shows i've ever watched. Why comedy central took off old snl for mad tv is beyond me, ruined the channel for me personally, except when South Park comes on of course.

I think the sindication contract ran out...either that, or they got tired of playing the same fifteen SNL episodes over and over...there were so many good episodes that never got played on Comedy Central. Honestly, I watch the reruns and remember them more fondly, because they cut them down to 60 minutes, and all the suck (well, most) is taken out.

Canadians play a part in SNL's success, so it's no surprise there's been a few Canucks in the cast;

Dan Aykroyd, Peter Aykroyd, Robin Duke, Phil Hartman, Norm Macdonald, Mark McKinney, Mike Myers, Tony Rosato, and Martin Short.
