where you going to put the ship, on the water in the middle of the storm?

Yeah, the ships have generators, and I'm sure there are some cruises leaving that got cancelled...so if you could find somewhere calm to put them, that may work.

well i can't imagine they can't moor the ships off the coast or perhaps military hospital ships off the coast and shuttle people out there.

true...but to get the ships off the coast, they'd have to fight the storms...I'd say the cruise ship option would be an idea for after the storms have passed, and they've got a whole bunch of homeless people.

Not to be the wet blanket but:

Cruise Ships - Many (most, probably) are "flagged" to other countries. In other words, they're not American properties and thus can probably not be comandeered.

Naval Ships - If there are any military vessels available, this is probably a more workable idea.

A possible problem with using any ship or liner is that people are probaly going to want to be able to come and go as they please. I don't know how feasible this would be.

A Silver Lining? - A lot of the people (I'm not saying "most") in shelters like the Super Dome were probably without homes before Katrina. Some of these people might actually end up with housing in the storms wake.

Over on the "Whipping Post" a couple of folks suggested that President Bush should've acted BEFORE the hurricane, because he KNEW that it was coming. I think that most of the people in those shelters KNEW Katrina was en route also. I do realize that there were people without funds or transportation, but I beleive that the bulk of those folks could have and should have gotten out while the gettin' was good. New Orleans has always been one of my favorite "playground" cities, but I have realized for years that they're just a hurricane away from being rinsed off of the planet. How anybody could've felt safe with this storm on the way is beyond my comprehesion.

I also believe that now is the time to roll up our sleeves and get off of our checkbooks and wallets. The Red Cross is probably the most reliable organization to make a donation to.

Let's pray for those folks, too.

Well i looked at weather.com and the 10 day forecast is sunny, so can't imagine there
are storms still out there that would inhibit ships from docking off shore.

Carnival Cruise Lines said just now that they have been asked, but that it would take "complicated issues" to make it happen, but they are looking into it.

I'm doubting that any cruise line is going to take a multi million dollar vessel and park it in the gulf and say "Here, have at it, just shuttle whomever you want out here and let them live on our ship"

I know that sounds incredibly cynical in the midst of this tragedy, but I would bet that isn't gonna' happen.

You're exactly right. I don't think corporate cruise ships want looters on their boats. Sounds cold hearted, but they're a business.

for medical reasons theyre floating hospitals #1, using a cruise ship is doable as they cruise the mississippi river and can dock on the river by french quarter end of canal st....unfortuanately there is no one resolutuoin and the more you listen and watch how desperate of a situation!!!!

Logistically the captain of the port will have ultimate say. If there is debris in the water, which since most houses in affected Mississippi and Louisiana have been washed God only knows where bringing non-military ships into the area is almost unquestionnable. The Government won't make itself liable by telling, or even suggesting, that commercial ships be used, even in this situation. Also, you have to remember that whenever there is water under foot, you have what is called "imminent danger", which means you are immediately at risk. I doubt they are going to put people already in crisis over water when the option is there to move them on to dry land.

I bet we could construct some type of mooring system like we did during D-day to dock ships off the coast for stability and shuttle people out there.
