I'm always amazed at how many acoustic players I meet who are unaware of Stefan Grossman.

I think Clapton Knows the underrated guitarists 'cause he had a bunch at his shindig last year including, JJCale, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Carlos (yes Carlos) Santana, and just think of that show.

jimmy herring & david gilmour

herring gets plenty of love on this board but most of the world doesn't know his name, while gilmour deserves to be mentioned right up there with his contemporaries jimmy page, eric clapton, and jeff beck in my opinion.

also, adam aijala of yonder mountain string band is a great bluegrass player. he shreds like a metal god (well, almost) except he does in on an acoustic, plus he can sing.
Gilmour has not been jilted ever. Even Mccartney had him play on a whole CD called "Run Devil Run". Give it a listen from '99.

I absolutely LOVE Gilmour and Steve Howe but there is no way they could be considered underrated...
They both are two of the most respected players I know of. In fact Steve Howe was voted by Guitar Player magazine as "Best overall guitarist" 5 years in a row which had never been done before...That is an amazing honor coming from such a respected magazine among the worlds elite players.

I mean is thing called underrated or unknown or simply anyone...???

I had considered that Steve Howe is probably not underrated, so much as unknown. But then, many people my age (30) have never heard of him, even though they've surely heard him at some point and said "Wow!" I can't wait to see him next month at the Beacon with Squire and Alan White. I was at the Yes show in Lowell, MA about 1.5 years ago, which is about to be released on DVD. Lots of Yes stuff going on next month, even though none of it is actually Yes.

Howe sits at the very top of the technical ability list and as stated cannot possibly be considered under-rated. Generation gaps aside.

I'll go with Hubert Sumlin as the most under-rated guitarist ever.

Followed by David Bromberg.

Is Steven Stills under-rated?

Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad. I know Warren was influenced by him, as he did a cover with Gov't Mule of an obscure GFR song called "Sin's a Good Man's Brother."

I'll second Jimmy Herring.
When I saw him as a guest with Col. Bruce Hampton and the codetalkers I expected the venue to be packed; but it wasn't as packed as the times I've see Particle/Henry Rollins/Darkstar Orchestra.

How about Derek Trucks?
Sure he's well known here but if I asked some random person on the street I doubt they'd know who he is.
