Having seen Gov't Mule for the first time new years eve and seeing DTB tons of times and planning to see them the weekend of Jan 8th at least once, I find it hard to compare Warren and Derek. For two people who play so well together with ABB they are so different in their own bands. Both are incredible, If you had to hear one of them which one would you pick??

first i'll give you all the obligatory "we're not here to discuss who's better than who and music isn't a competition and everyone has different strong points" speech, but if you ask me, when derek was about 14, he was already beyond where warren is. derek, imo, is just more musical, more spiritual, more natural, and his playing is extremely emotional. and the dude's voice is so his own and the things that he's doing now, branching out and all over the map with the styles that he plays...just incredible. warren is good, but as a guitar player he doesn't do anything that makes me say "god, i'll never be able to play like that" or "how the hell did he think to do that" or "this guy is constantly reaching towards another level"

Yeah I'd go with Derek too. Warren's talent is the way he mixes everything together: he's a hell of a guitar player, great singer, great songwriter, and he's also an unbelievable band leader and producer. He's got it all. But Derek has him beat in the guitar department.

I love Warren, but Derek is the reincarnation of Duane Allman so I'll have to go with Derek ...

Have a little patience with Derek. He's 25 and he's already a great guitar player and bandleader, and he does write. I don't think Warren had done too much songwriting or bandleading or producing at 25.

For what it's worth...I think Warren has picked up tons of new technique from Derek over the past 3 or so years and I cannot see where it is the reverse.

Also, has anyone ever walked out of any Warren show saying, "Wow, he's the greatest guitarist ever!" or "He made me cry"?

The real question here is "if" Dickey comes back does Greg choose Warren or Derek?

I am fairly certain Derek stays...No, I have no info, just speculation thusfar.

Geez, y'all are bummin' me out here!!

Just as Dickey complimented Duane, and visa versa, I think Warren and Derek compliment each other. I don't want to think of either of them ever NOT being in ABB. I love the line up as is. Dickey will always have a special place in ABB history, but I don't think ABB can get much better than it is now. Just my opinion....

This topic is difficult for me, I love both Derek and Warren!!!

But onestly, if I must do a choice, I prefer Warren!

It's a musical reason!

You know, sometimes Derek's tracks are too intellectual................

I choose Derek Trucks, every day. With no offense to Warren, of course.

I just prefer Derek's style of music. Derek's got a smoother flavor that brings floods of introspective emotion, while Warren can rip and pound you to shreds like you've been in a streetfight. I think this is evident from listening to the distinctive styles of DTB and the Mule. They're very complementary in ABB, the main reason the current lineup is so reinvigorated and special, IMO.

I heard that the ABB might be doing a "shorter" tour (fewer stops, but with extended stays) in order to better accomodate Derek's desire to develop the DTB [edit: and spend more time with his growing family]. I would imagine that Warren would appreciate the time to develop his many projects (or get some rest) as well. Anybody else got dish on this?

i'm a fairly experienced guitarist, and i can honestly say that Derek is a far superior player than Warren in every aspect. I can't count how many times, during a call-and-response guitar thing between Warren and Derek, I've exclaimed "Wow Derek just blew Warren out of the water..."
Derek is very skilled in "crafting" a solo as well. In the majority of his solos, you can pick out a definite beginning, middle, and end...with a climax towards the end. Check out "Key to the Highway" from this year's Fox Run for a good example of this.
Warren's playing, at least what I've heard with the Allmans, is less varied, basically pentatonic/blues scale soloing, he does repeat licks quite often.
I'm not dissing him, he's an amazing musician, and he wouldn't be asked to play for the Allman Brothers Band, The Dead, ARU, Phil Lesh, etc. if he wasn't good at playing music
.

and i think his voice trumps just about any other rock/blues singer i've ever heard. His voice, like Gregg's voice back in the 70's, is the blues.

edit: just read the post above me, well i definitely want Derek to be allowed to develop the DTB and, more importantly, his family, but i hope they don't take away the Jones Beach show! I'm probably not going to be able to go to a Beacon show this year, so I'm counting on them coming to Jones Beach in the Summer! oh well, i suppose everyone else is praying they don't take a show near them too lol.

Derek suggested they might try that in one interview last year. We're so far away from the summer tour at this point that there's probably no scoop to be had.

Yes, I agree.

Derek have a new way to play slide guitar...

But, of course, Duane had a huge influence on him....

I pick Jimmy Herring!

you can't make me pick between Derek and Warren...so I'll pick someone else.

DTBSETLISTS: actually, the first time I saw Mule, I said that very thing..."Warren is the best guitarist alive." PLus, DTB opened the show, so I got to see them both.

But...does Warren's playing make me cry? Of joy, sometimes, yes...except for Patchwork Quilt....the solo accoustic versions make me cry every time...especially the one from Alpine Valley where he sounds like he's either sick, or choked up, trying to get the words out.

This is not a knock on Derek, not at all...his playing does all the same things to me that Warren's does, but I just figured I'd mention the Warren bits because I can...lol.

Warren is twice the "Duane Allman" Derek will ever be. I don't think Derek sounds anything like Duane. He has his own style and his own persona. Warren is more like Duane reincarnated. I'm also a guitar player and the race between Derek and Warren is pretty close. They both have there own style so it's impossible to tell who is "better". But as for slide, Derek can tear Warren up. But as for straight rock n roll, Derek doesn't stand a chance.

Warren was around when Duane was, so I think that rules out reincarnation. Neither of them actually sounds like Duane, but Derek can when he wants to. Check out the best shows from the summer 2000 run, especially the Mountain Jams.

I think Derek could copy Duane all he wanted and play the same as him, but thats not him. He's bringing his own style into the band, which i have to say is more skillful than Warren. I maybe a little one sided cuz im a hugh dtb/derek fan, but when I see Warren solo theres never really a time i think to myself "Man i'll never be able to play that" he can blow me away, but not like a good DT solo. Derek just makes my head explode. But everyones entitled to their opinion, this is just coming from a spoiled guitar player, oh well.
