been a deadhead for twenty something yrs now...sundays are grateful dead sundays...i was a little angry that the band went out as The Dead...i think that after Jerry passed anything with the name relating to Grateful or Dead should be out of bounds...a true head would know that The Other Ones( which i thought was a cool name) should suffice as the band that we were looking for... i always thought of going to a Dead show as going to a high school dance with a really cool band playing....

Not really a DEADHEAD because while touring for 13.5 years:

Paid for my own tickets

Always watched the opening band

Kept a fulltime job....

Camping is fun, in between venues....but, after three days of dancing, people start to smell like fish....

I've been a Deadhead for twenty years...I never associated the title with a particular scent or style of clothing.

To me it was more like a feeling towards the band...I could have watched them play all night, every night. Same goes with some incarnations of the ABB...especially the Duane/Dicky periods and the Warren/Dicky periods...they're my favourites, with the new Hittin' the Note incarnation a close third, closing fast. Hittin' the Note is my favourite non-Duane album by far....

Deadhead stories;

I met this girl at the 91 RFK show where the Dead brought back Casey Jones. During the brouhaha that followed, everyone was hugging and grooving and this girl beside me turns to me and says; "This is like my first show in '89 where they brought back Darkstar. Everyone started freaking out...and I got scared and left."

Many years ago, I briefly met this couple through friends from Denver that sold doses. They talked about a night where the girl drank a glass of what she thought was water...and tripped out for three days. The girl didn't know her man was making sheets as the story goes, so the glass was full of pure liquid LSD... probably close to 800 hits maybe, or so she says. Her boyfriend takes over the narration at this point, telling me how he was trying to pacify her, keep her safe, all without the cops finding out. The girl looks at me and says "It was a bummer..I missed two shows". No worry for her mental health, just concern about missing two shows that she didn't have tickets for anyway.

RFK '92 was the Casey Jones show-I remember because my wife fell in love with me that night...I didn't realize it quite then but she let me know later....

That Dark Star show must have been the Warlocks run at Hampton in Oct '89
They broke out a bunch of songs from retirement.
The most beautiful was Attics of My Life-really sweet harmonies.

It was also at Hampton in 1986 that they reintroduced Box of Rain- my brother was scratching his head wondering why everybody went nuts(after 13 years hiatus-duh!)
Then the next night they opened with Road Runner Blues- and all the Heads were
scratching their heads as my brother was going off for HUMBLE PIE!!!!!

Not really a deadhead as much as a head, but I first saw them at Watkins Glen and have seen both the Grateful Dead and the Dead at Red Rocks.

Some of you may me familiar with this. It was in the Jerry Garcia tribute edition of Relix magazine right after Jerry died. Brings a happy tear to my eye every time I read it. If this doesn't put a Dead show in a capsule, I don't know what does.

A DEAD SHOW

You're greeted by hundreds of smiling faces,
And people living lives at their own paces.
They smile and wave and talk to each other,
Loving each one as their sister and brother.
In the background, there's the beating of a bongo,
Setting the mood for tonights show.
The different songs flowing into each other as if they were one,
As are the people who are there to have fun.
There is peace and happiness all around,
A break from the world many have found.
People who have flowers in their hair,
Don't want to judge you, only care.
People dance and listen as the music flows,
It's a different experience at every show.
I only wish life was a Dead show,
Where adults could escape pressure and children could grow.

-Stephanie Cuomo

I like the anaology, but based on my preferred tunes from each band, I'd flip them.

Absolutely! And so easy to do!
Sometimes they flip when I'm not looking.
