This is not another "he said/she said" thread...I just wanted to share my thoughts about something(as if anyone cared, right!)

I just got finished listening to my copy of the DEAD 02/09/04(thanks Mr. Morgan!) and let me tell 'ya...it is H-O-T!!! Warren has really added some spice to their mix!!! His vocals on the DEAD classics are superb!!! The guys in the DEAD made an excellent choice in Warren. He is truely the MAN.

Well, that's my 2 cents...I thought it needed to be said.

SOUNDS GOOD TO ME,TOO!!
I've been a DEAD fan since birth...raised by DEADHEADS on ta road!(Which has has it's GOODS & BADS!!)
I've been a devoted Warren fan since catching him & Woody w/ ABB in the early 90's!!
GOV'T MULE is right up there...for me!!!!
I LOVE Warren with Phil & Friends!!He totally embraces alot of deep DEAD tunes w/ his own unique flavor!!(Wharf Rat/Stella Blue/Dire Wolf...)
And don't get me goin on and on and on about the 2003 JOAN OSBOURNE & FRIENDS TOUR!!!
I think that it will be a FINE summer for music....INDEED!!!

I guess I'm in the minority here when I say that I believe the new Dead are Phil & Friends with an egotistical rhythm guitarist who's not needed and 2 drummers who together aren't as good as Molo. And Barraco will be sorely missed, he brings a lot of emotion to every show he's a part of. And Warren doesn't really have much of a role either, he plays in the cracks and sings the Jerry ballads and some other songs. I hope they gel and become great, otherwise I hope Phil tours again.

I like Phil and Friends better than The Dead. It seems they
were really tight the last few shows I saw.

Can't say that about The Dead..... Yet.

Hope they get tight this summer.

Is it OK to like Bobby?

Peace
John

I'm not sure you are. In this thread, maybe, but a number of others have said the same thing elsewhere. It's a pretty substantial minority. I'm part of it myself.

I'm anticipating some excitement added to the Dead. Phil and Friends. the Phil Lesh Quintet was phenomenal. I hate that Rob got booted. I think the Dead's Rhythm Devils do something different than Molo. What they do got really good in the 80's with the train whistle and jack hammer. Hell, I saw Mickey play the floor once. Other times he made HUGE sounds with big drumz, mallets, and the pythagorean monochord... then the loudest sound of the night was him ending the drumz thing by lightly scraping his fingernail down a drum skin. It got louder and louder and LOUDER... then Jerry chubbied out and went deep.

I enjoyed the Dead show I saw last year. I'd prefer PLQ. They are fresher and seem to experiment more. I'm very glad Govt Mule is out there and I hope they will maintain a heavy schedule for years to come. If I could have 5 PLQ shows, 5 ABB shows, and at least 9 Govt Mule shows a year I'd be a happy camper.

I'll go see the Dead and have a good time. Jimmy is phenomenal. Bobby takes a lot of crap. I saw several of his solo projects in the 80's and have always enjoyed Ratdog shows. I guess I think the side projects are classier than resurrecting the Dead. It smells too much like money.

Is there a point to all of the side projects? They never do anything new and all they play is Grateful Dead songs. The only side project that did something new was Phil and Friends. I saw Ratodg and it wasn't anything special. The dead with Warren is really sweet though. Nugs.net had the 2/9 show a whil ago. Warren has a really good slide solo on Stella Blue. The band would be pretty good if they kicked out Bob Wier and stuck with Warren.

Yeah. And released the drummers and signed Molo as a free agent. And traded Chimenti in a sign-and-trade 3-team deal with Ratdog and the Zen Tricksters to pick up Barraco. Then they'd have something.

As per the side projects, Mickey Hart's side project does something new, I think they're called Bembe Orisha. He really explores world music with them, and though I'm not a world music fan I respect that. Phil's project has their own stuff and they also take the music in a completely different direction. Ratdog has always been billed as Dead lite, and they will continue to be as long as Bobby's ego stays inflated.

Mickey also had "Mystery Box". That band had a vocal ensemble of women that performed amazing harmonies. They were called the "Mint Juleps" I think.

Ideally the point of the side projects would be to distribute hallucinogens and hallucinogenic music to communties that would otherwise not be exposed. That was long ago and far away... I don't think that happens anymore.

As long as Warren stays with the ABB, I have no problem with what Kirk West has referred to as his "part-time summer job."

I tend to agree with the general pro-Phil, anti-Bobby drift of many of these comments.

"Is it okay to like Bobby?"

Well, normally I would say no, but you seem like a nice guy John, so I'll let it slide this time. My friend Danna had the last word on Bob Weir, for my money: "Well, somebody in the band needs to wear the short pants and be the rock and roll star!"

**** THE DEAD i HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD THE FANATACISM. I think many people are more into the lifestyle than the music. The Dead a more like a cult than anything else even more than musicians. Their not even comprable to the ABB !
