I talked to Warren yesterday to catch up on some things and do an interview to preview the Mule's upcoming gig in Huntington, West Virginia on the 24th on the banks of the Ohio River. Most of the interview centers on the Mule, of course, and that will be out in a week and a half or so. But, a little extra, here is what he said about Gregg and the future of the ABB;

quote:

My first rock concert ever was in 1973 when I went to see the Allman Brothers. Do you remember the first time that you saw the ABB live?

" I didn't see them until 1981 or something. I never saw the old band."

I didn't see the old band either. I saw the Chuck Leavell version and I guess you saw the Danny Toler version.

" Yeah. I did. I wish I had seen any earlier version, obviously starting with Duane and Berry. I never saw any of my absolute favorite bands from the old days. I guess between living in a small town and working all of the time, I just never did. I saw a bunch of cool concerts beginning in 1972 but, you know, the Led Zeppelins of the world didn't come to Asheville (laughs)."

Warren, the Allman Brothers haven't put a new album out in seven years and it seems like it's winding down. How do you think it is going to play out?

" Well, for years now, the band's been talking about doing less and less. And, this year was an indicator. Before we knew anything about Gregg's liver situation, we'd already agreed to only do a hand full of shows. The ironic thing is now that Gregg's got a new liver, I think he's going to want to get back out on the road so he maybe trying to talk some of us into adding some shows here and there, (laughs) which is a good thing."

Have you talked to him lately?

" I spoke to him yesterday. He's doing great. He sounds great. You know, it's obviously an amazing experience and he's glad to be on the other side of it. But I think he just feels thankful and feels like he's got a new lease on life. He sounded wonderful and he says that he is already starting to feel better than ever. Science and technology are amazing."

Nice article Derek. Been telling all those folks back in the big "I" about Warren coming to Huntington.

As we have learned, saying it and actually doing it are two entirely different things.
