So I am headed to the second weekend of Jazzfest in NOLA next week. I have never seen Aretha live, and I am a big fan of her stuff. However, Derek and Susan are also playing around the same time at the Fairgrounds. I think they start about 10 minutes after Aretha. I have been listening to the Fillmore Show with King Curtisís band backing up Aretha and I canít get enough. I wouldnít expect the same type of show at this point in her career, but I feel she is pretty much a legend that I should see. On the other hand, I have been dying to see Derek and Susanís band too. What to do, what to do? Anyone have any insights into Aretha live these days? I suppose I could have worse predicaments.

I think I would opt for Aretha because you may never hear her again and you know Derek and Susan will be around for a long time and have probably heard them many many times already.

I'd go see Derek and Susan and then buy a DVD of Aretha from back in the day.

Saw Aretha two years ago at Radio City. Wanted to see her for the same reasons expressed above. Also took my wife. She was disappointing. Sang only a few of the tunes I wanted to hear, looked like a fat sausage struffed into a tight dress, talked way too much on stage (a way for her to waste time?) and brought out guests to fill up the rest of the time. She sang for about 40 minutes of a 2 hour show. Will not pay to see her ever again!!

i'd check Aretha out since she's not touring so much these days, then head over to Susan & Derek if she's too divaesque and not hittin the note for you.

lots of the old timers won't be around or touring much longer, so why not give her a shot? at least you can mark her off your list.

Derek & Susan will be a better show I bet, but I'd probably see Aretha if all esle were equal (including logistics). Probably won't get a chance again.

Aretha, and I bet Derek and Susan would give you the same answer. They will be around for years to come, not Aretha.
