Vic Chesnutt died today at age 45, the head of his label tells the Music Mix. The acclaimed singer-songwriter had been in a coma since earlier in the week. Some reports have said Chesnutt attempted suicide before the coma, but the cause of death has not been announced.

A statement on Constellation Records’ official site reads in full: “Surrounded by family and friends, Vic Chesnutt died in Athens Georgia this afternoon, Friday 25 December at 14:59. In the few short years that we knew him personally, Vic transformed our sense of what true character, grace and determination are all about. Our grief is inexpressible and Vic’s absence unfathomable. We will make more information available according to the wishes of Vic’s family and friends.”

It’s an unspeakably tragic end to Chesnutt’s story. Left in a wheelchair by a car accident at age 18, Chesnutt went on to build a devoted following with his folk-rock songs, many of which dealt eloquently with themes of pain and mortality. That following included many fellow artists: Fans including Madonna, R.E.M., and Smashing Pumpkins covered his work for Sweet Relief II, a 1996 compilation that raised funds for musicians’ health care.

Chesnutt spoke openly about his own death in an interview with NPR’s Terry Gross that aired earlier this month. “You know, I’ve attempted suicide three or four times. It didn’t take,” Chesnutt said then. “I’ve flirted with death my whole life. Even as a young kid I was sick and almost died a few times.” Pressed by Gross on the subject of his suicide attempts, he added, “Sometimes I’d be angry that they revived me. I’d be like, ‘How dare you?’…But of course as the hours and days wear on, you realize, well, there is joy to be had.”

Chesnutt was a regular performer at Athens's 40 Watt Club, and caught the attention of R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe who produced Chesnutt's first two albums.

God bless Vic and his family. Some of y'all mnight remember him in the scenes from "Slingblade" that he appeared in with Col. Bruce. I guess the poor man had a lot to overcome in his life. I hope and pray the next one will be kinder.

I saw this earlier today. So sad. The music that came from his unfortunate existence was amazing.

Very sad. A tragic end to a life with more than its own share of tragedy.

But his life would have been all the more tragic had Vic not found at least a partial redemption in music.

Michael Stipe of R.E.M. deserves some major credit for believing in Vic's talent, helping him get a recording deal, producing his 1st two albums, and touting his name in interviews as an upcoming talent to help him gain some national recognition.

Vic was a true talent and an artist.

RIP Vic Chesnutt

I am sorry to hear this. I watched the "sling blade" directors cut DVD recently, and in the "extras" there was a roundtable discussion with Billy Bob, Yoakam, drummer Mickey Jones. they talked about the scene where Yoakams' character "Doyle" shoves Vic Chesnutts character violently into the door in his wheelchair. they said Vic insisted on doing all his own stunts, and was kind of banged up after all the takes they did. the original script called for "Doyle" to push "Mark" through a screen door and down some stairs!. Yoakam said, that was too "Fuc8ed up" and could we change that please.

another fine southern gent gone too soon.

he's free from that danged chair tho.

if y'all aren't familiar w/ Vic, check some of those vids. it's an acquired taste, kinda like Tom Waits, but once you get it, it hits you right between the eyes. he had a great way with words, always something wry going on in there.

his playing w/ brute (wsp+Vic) was also phenomenal.

r.i.p. big man in the little chair
