A trio - not a ďpower trio,Ē just gtr, bs, drms
Formed in 1971, & one of their very first live gigs became their best-known recording -
Sort of obscure I guess, but maybe not

Wow Stephen. I'm stumped. Formed in 1971, 3 piece with guitar, bass and drums....early live show became their best known album and not a power trio.

Was it electric guitar and did they sing?

They did - hint, by happenstance/lucky circumstances etc, their first live gig, or one of their first, was b4 a full house at Carnegie Hall, where the album was recorded

Did the guitar player happen to go by the name of Joe?

James Gang did record an album at Carnegie Hall in 1971, but they formed years before that and are definitely a power trio

My info is bad, itís not their 1st album, & they formed b4 1971
Itís Glass Harp, Live at Carnegie Hall - fronted by the great guitarist Phil Keaggy

As I thought about it they had to have been formed b4 Ď71
Word back in the day, true or not who knows, was that Jimi Hendrix after seeing/hearing Phil, said Phil had it all over him
Jimi of course died in Sept 1970, so...

Sorry for making a mess outta the thread - please continue it, will redeem myself w/another question when I know for sure what Iím talkin about
Itís a very good album - Side 2, the 25 min or so jam, Do Lord

Is it The Wackers. Don't remember their first release. The Allman Brothers played there about November of 1971 according to the Hall website.

Ha, I just went through the Carnegie Hall archives of shows 1971-1972 and was still stumped.

Glass Harp and James Gang both formed at Kent State, oddly enough.

Hereís another try
4 piece band, voc, gtr bs drms
Formed in 1974 - got great early exposure opening shows for the superstar band on the label - had 2 big hits on their 1974 debut album

It may have been Glass Harpís 1st show outside Ohio - itís a 1971 live recording from Carnegie Hall, I know that much

Quintet - keys, drums, bass, sax, guitar
Debuted in 1975
lip-synched all of their songs.

Nope.

Another clue - drummer cites Keith Moon as a major influence.

Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Animal play drums.

This actually involves two bands but with the same personnel - opened for themselves and got booed off the stage.

Nope. Here's a clue - both bands, while augmented by other musicians, are mostly known as a trio. And the drummer position in one of the bands has an unusually high mortality rate.
