Today marks the sixth anniversary of the passing of Widespread Panic guitarist Michael Houser. Lost to pancreatic cancer at the far-too-early age of 40, Houser was a craftsman of the first order and a subtle, often underrated originator on his instrument. His brilliance with a volume pedal alone warrants him a spot in guitar history books, and his angular take on the blues was equally unique. In his short time here he touched myriad lives, and we encourage you to pause and reminisce with us today about all the fine and stirring things the man brought to this world.

Widespread has never really hit in Canada. Although I had heard some things over the years not much really made me want to run out and buy some albums. After Schools played with the Mule for a while, I listened to some more things and I liked it but still didn't make me run out.

Then Linnie gave me some good advice. She said to give the albums a few listens and it will grow on me. As with most good advice, I didn't take it and they sat on the shelf.

Pulled them out before the recent WP show at the Ottawa Blues Fest so that some tunes would be familiar. The show was amazing but I knew it would be with Herring on guitar.

The best part is that Linnie was right. Seems to take some repeated listens but I am really enjoying them. At first, I apprecited how Michael Houser was underplaying compared to some of the long soloists. Keeping it short. After repeated listens I began to see the genius in his playing. Really enjoying it.

Maybe someone could suggest some albums and/or some live shows to be tracked down.

Much apprecited.

I hope Mr. Houser is having a great time jamming in Heaven.

Rest in Peace. Every show the band plays is a tribute to what Mikey created just as the ABB is a tribute to what Duane Allman started

If you all have not got the Itunes below I would go and get it today. Amazing stuff

51 songs, and only $14.99. Even better some kid named Derek plays on Space Wrangler and Mercy / Jam over 35 mins of music in those two songs.
