This is a stunning breakdown happening! I've been a Mets fan my entire life and I've never seen a team choke like this. The bullpen is so bad and the starting pitching isn't much better.

Wake me when it's over! I can't watch...

While right now this looks like a team in a downward spiral, they are still in first and have the schedule in there favor. What I find interesting is that a Yankee fan is talking about an "historic choke". The most historic choke was the 2004 ALCS.
It doesn't look like the team is in a downward spiral..they ARE in a downward spiral.
Whether it is a choke or just a team caught coasting remains to be seen. ... but I wouldn't cite Baseball history as your argument..you could never win that one.

Well, Mets fans can take solace that the Phillies (my team) are chasing them. While I haven't given up hope, the Phils will find a way to blow it.

My thoughts exactly.

Is there any scenario where the Mets and Phils will play a 1 game tiebreaker???

As someone who lived through the infamous '64 collapse (6 1/2 ahead with 12 to play), I've come to embrace Yogi's "It ain't over 'til it's over" mantra

To answer the playoff question, if the Mets and Phils are tied at the end of the season there's a one game palyoff, although I don't know which city the game will be played. I'm praying that doesn't happen because the Phils recent masterery over the Mets will end that day.

Actually,if they end up tied and they're records would guarantee them the wild card, then there is no playoff game. The division is given to the team who won the season series and the other team is the wild card.

As a Yankee fan, the rivalry is far bigger to them than to us. Historically, they are not half the franchise we are, their ballpark is a pit and in one Subway Series, they managed to win one game...who cares about them? But, I hope they hold on because I want Willie Randolph, that old Yankee, to succeed.

If the Phillies and Mets tie, game will be played at Philly on Monday (Phils won a coin toss to already determine the location). The second place NL East team has no guarantee to a wildcard as there is only only wildcard spot awarded and the Padres and Rockies are right there with the Phillies. Being a Phillies fan, I too am a bit fatalistic and while I remain hopeful and will cheer them on, I'll believe it when I see it.

Of course there is no guarantee for a wild card for one of them right now,but there could be when the final standings are in.In that case there is no playoff game.

All I am saying is that only one team has ever blown a 3-0 lead.
That was so 2004...

Tonight's update:

Phillies 6 Braves 0 - 3rd inning

Cards 3 Mets 0 - 3rd inning

The only solice in the Mets score is that they blow leads. So maybe it's a good thing that they trail for a change early on....

all i can say is............ LET' GO METS!!!!
Mrs. Yankweed, do you mean "Let's go," or "Let it go, Mets"?

I didn't want to say anything earlier, Mets fans, but I had a strange dream last night. I ran into Bruce Springsteen out behind a venue, where he was warming up, either dancing or stretching or something physical. I acknowledged him but was going to let him have his space, but he had me come over to him. Bruce was wearing a red Cardinals pullover jersey with the birds on the bat! (This being a dream, it wasn't the exact item like the one Cardinals shirt I own, but it was still unmistakable.)

Basically the jersey Bruce was wearing
"Jersey Bruce"--totally no pun intended!

I expressed surprise that he was wearing a Cardinals shirt, and I said, in light of this 1-game tilt between the Mets and the Cardinals, that they really love him in New York, where many, many Mets fans would be his fans and would be bummed out if he was wearing a Cardinals shirt! (I mean, a guy from Asbury Park--c'mon!)

Bruce replies like, "No, you gotta love the Cardinals and all they've done." Then he started going into historical figures, like 12 World Championships or whatever, but I brought him back to 2007--September 2007, to be exact--by commenting that "the Ankiel thing" turned out pretty devastating, when it looked like the Cardinals were bound to overtake both the Brewers and the Cubs. Bruce was sympathetic, but that didn't affect his upbeat outlook on the night's action!

So, Bruce took me indoors, backstage, and we kept talking. In real time, even considering the jumps through space getting from one point to another, this encounter would have lasted a couple minutes at least. Anyway, I was asking him, "Are you going to be accompanied by the E Street Band?" Yes. "Max . . . and Steve?" Yes and yes.

And Max and some other people come into the room. Pretty quickly, Max reaches out and seems to jam a cigarette in my mouth and immediately withdraw it. I got tobacco on my tongue and splutter in protest, "That's the wrong end of a cigarette!" Max doesn't really say it in so many words, but he is like, Oh, you think so? Then I see that he's lighting up a joint, and he had used my mouth to wet the end he was finishing up rolling. Then I notice there's a roach between my own lips now, and the paper is sorta falling apart, so I wet it, retighten it, and relight it. (In real life I haven't had a joint in 28 years, but this sorta dream has happened a few times.)

.

Albert King and his trademark Flying V

Later in my dreams I was at a club jamming on guitars with an unusually personable Albert King. (This might be left over from Tuesday's season opener of House, where House is playing a '67 Flying V.) I had like no calluses on my fingertips, which concerned me at first, yet I was making it sound pretty sweet. Sometimes I heard something Albert doing that was extra cool, and then I'd realize that it was actually me playing that.

Go, Cardinals 2008!
