Here we go again...

August is certainly a tough month for some of our fallen heroes. Jerry, SRV, Allen Woody...and of course Michael Houser, lead guitarist and original member of Widespread Panic. Mikey was just 40 years old when succumbed to pancreatic cancer on August 10, 2002. He was taken away much too soon but he left us with years of great music and incredible memories...

Like The Dead, I jumped on The Panic Bus pretty early when they were still playing bars and clubs and they pulled me in immediately. I knew right awy, they would make it BIG. I saw their growth in creativity and popularity right before my eyes. Every year they got a bit bigger until they were no longer the Jam scene's best kept secret. After The Dead and ABB, Panic was my band and I followed them around a bit for the better part of the 1990's. I got to meet Mike a couple of times and he was as sweet as anyone could possibly be. He was very still and quiet on stage, getting lost in his music...but his playing was very unique - subtle, dynamic, melodic and powerful all at the same time with a sound all his own. Mikey kept playing until he was pretty close to the end - he gave it his all until it became too much to go on. He is missed in The Panic Community very very much and I will never forget him...Rest Easy Michael.

It's been three years since I
Last saw your face
In that time I've done well
So it would seem
But we cannot escape
From what we find down deep
And I am still afraid
I pray my soul To keep

- Michael Houser's Burned Faceless

Some vinatge Panic with Michael for your viewing pleasure...

Great guitarist. Really missed. Also Elvis Heart attack, August 16, 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Even though John Popper is not well liked here let us remember Bobby Sheehan, (b. June 12, 1968 in Summit, New Jersey, U.S.A. - d. August 20, 1999 in New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A.) was the bassist for Blues Traveler. He died of a drug overdose in 1999.

Well said Eddie.

I saw Panic last year on Aug 10 and they played this song, "Can't Change the Past" from Mikey's solo album, "Sandbox". It's the first and only time that Panic has played it and it has really grown on me. Here are the lyrics:

Canít change the past
Wasnít built to last
I had my fun and I climbed to the sun
But I was burned up on the surface
But Iím still here underneath
And Iíll be at your door tomorrow
Or the next day
Iím on my way

Canít change the way
The way it goes
Nobody answers ícause
Nobody knows what to say on the day
The flood waters come
And take your dreams away
But Iíll be at your door someday

Canít change the way
Time rushes on
When I look behind me itís already gone
But then thereís you and you alone
You have been right here with me all along
And Iíll be at your door someday

Yes, he fought it until the end. Played his last show 7/2/02 in Iowa, after the massive Red Rocks run, "Hangin' stars with a hammer and wire" like no other.

Thank you for all the music you played while we were havin' a good time, every day...

Rock In Peace Brother Michael
May your family be strong as you watch over them.
