Tis' the season, right?

My favorite, without a doubt, is "Father Christmas" by the Kinks. I've always found Ray Davies to be a brilliant songwriter, capable of being ever so funny and poignant at the same time. Kinks concerts were legendary for ending:

1.) when they were supposed to end - unlikely
2.) when either Ray or Dave, or both, passed out - very likely
3.) when a fight broke out.................between Ray and Dave - almost as likely as 2.

"When I was small I believed in Santa Claus
Though I knew it was my dad
And I would hang up my stocking at Christmas
Open my presents and I'd be glad

But the last time I played Father Christmas
I stood outside a department store
A gang of kids came over and mugged me
And knocked my reindeer to the floor

They said:
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Don't give my brother a Steve Austin outfit
Don't give my sister a cuddly toy
We don't want a jigsaw or monopoly money
We only want the real McCoy

Father Christmas, give us some money
We'll beat you up if you make us annoyed
Father Christmas, give us some money
Don't mess around with those silly toys

But give my daddy a job cause he needs one
He's got lots of mouths to feed
But if you've got one, I'll have a Machine Gun
So I can scare all the kids down the street

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
Give all the toys to the little rich boys

Have yourself a merry merry Christmas
Have yourself a good time
But remember the kids who got nothin'
While you're drinkin' down your wine

Father Christmas, give us some money
We got no time for your silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
We want your bread, so don't make us annoyed
Give all the toys to the little rich boys.

That's my favorite - What's yours?

Bobo, I want to make a preemptive strike strongly against Bruce Springsteen's rendition of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." The worst! I'd rather hear those dogs barking "Jingle Bells" or that "Grandma Got Run Down by the Reindeer" one. Actually, I sorta like the barking dogs' "Jingle Bells."

On a more positive note, hmmm . . . I always have to go with Duane's snippets of "Joy to the World" in "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" and "You Don't Love Me."

And what have you done
Another year over
A new one just begun

So this is christmas

The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

And so this is christmas

For rich and for poor ones
The road is so long

And so happy christmas

I remember we used to have this station in town called Z-Rock - lots of metal and the harder edge of classic rock (Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Sabbath, etc.).

Well, one year they played a version of Jingle Bells by some metal band (the name Raven comes to mind) being fronted by the singer from Accept. Remember that guy? Talk about a shrieker.

2000 Miles by the Pretenders is really cool. ELP also does a great Christmas song...but I can't remember the title. Sung by Greg Lake I think...

One of my faves:

Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say,
On a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day,
That's the island greeting that we send to you
From the land where palm trees sway,
Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright,
The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night,
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii's way
To say "Merry Christmas to you."

A very Merry Christmas to you."

You guys don't like The Boss very much, do you?

I think Bruce and the E-Street Band playing Santa Claus is Comin' to Town is great! The intro is especially cool.

I Wont Be Home For Christmas

(Deck the halls with boughs of holly fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la)
(Tis the season to be jolly fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la)

Outside the carolers start to sing
I can't describe the joy they bring
Cause joy is something they don't bring me

My girlfriend is by my side
From the roof are hanging sickles of ice
Their whiny voices get irritating
It's Christmas time again

So I stand with a dead smile on my face
Wondering how much of my time they'll waste
Oh God I hate these Satan's helpers

And then I guess I must have snapped
Because I grabbed a baseball bat
And made them all run for shelter

It's Christmas time again
It's time to be nice to the people you can't stand all year
I'm growing tired of all this Christmas cheer
You people scare me
Please stay away from my home
If you don't wanna get beat down
Just leave the presents and then leave me alone.

Well I guess it's not cool to freak on Christmas Eve
Cause the cops came and arrested me
They had an unfair advantage

And even though the jail didn't have a tree
Christmas came a night early
Causes a guy named Bubba unwrapped my package (hot damn)

It's Christmas time again
It's time to be nice to the people you can't stand all year
I'm growing tired of all this Christmas cheer
You people scare me
Please stay away from my home
If you don't wanna get beat down
Just leave the presents and then leave me alone

I won't be home
I won't be home for Christmas
I won't be home
I won't be home for Christmas (please post my bail)
I won't be home
I won't be home for Christmas (please post my bail)
I won't be home
I won't be home for Christmas (please post my bail)
I won't be home
I won't be home for Christmas (please post my bail)
I won't be home
I won't be home for Christmas

(note...I love Christmas...but this song is frickin hilarious)

I like Robert Earl Keen's song "Merry Christmas From the Family" (the lyrics speak for themselves):

Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk at our Christmas party
We were drinking champagne punch and homemade eggnog
Little sister brought her new boyfriend
He was a Mexican
We didn't know what to think of him until he sang
Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad

Brother Ken brought his kids with him
The three from his first wife Lynn
And the two identical twins from his second wife Mary Nell
Of course he brought his new wife Kay
Who talks all about AA
Chain smoking while the stereo plays Noel, Noel
The First Noel

Carve the Turkey
Turn the ball game on
Mix margaritas when the eggnog's gone
Send somebody to the Quickpak Store
We need some ice and an extension chord
A can of bean dip and some Diet Rites
A box of tampons, some Marlboro Lights
Halleluja everybody say Cheese
Merry Christmas from the family

Fred and Rita drove from Harlingen
I can't remember how I'm kin to them
But when they tried to plug their motor home in
They blew our Christmas lights
Cousin David knew just what went wrong
So we all waited out on our front lawn
He threw a breaker and the lights came on
And we sang Silent Night, Oh Silent Night, Oh Holy Night

Carve the turkey turn the ball game on
Make Bloody Mary's
Cause We All Want One!
Send somebody to the Stop 'N Go
We need some celery and a can of fake snow
A bag of lemons and some Diet Sprites
A box of tampons, some Salem Lights
Halleluja, everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the Family

Feliz Navidad

We all know we can relate...

But I also have to agree with Mr. Nelson:

quote:
I always have to go with Duane's snippets of "Joy to the World" in "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?" and "You Don't Love Me."

I smile every time I hear it at the end of "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad" - Duane making his presence felt on one of Clapton's best albums.

Our band does "Away in a Manger" to the tune/melody of "Aragon Mill" by Sy Kahn. Not exactly a "rocker", but it fits wonderfully and is a beautiful song.

My faves...

John Lennon - Merry Xmas (War is Over)
Greg Lake - I believe In Father CHristmas

...and a strange one, but I really like that tune by the Waitresses called "Christmas Wrapping" or something like that. Its kind of a funny little tune but it gets me in the spirit...

...and who can forget The Adam Sandler song for our Jewish friends around the world.

Okay, I give, what's wrong with Springsteen's version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"? I feel like I'm missing something here, I always thought it was pretty cool. The dynamics show how the E Street Band could take even a silly Christmas song and make it interesting. Back in the day, they were truly one of the greatest live bands in the history of rock music.

Now, if you want to diss anything Bruce has produced in the last ten years, be my guest!

No discussion of Christmas classics is complete without James Brown's "Santa Claus Please Come to the Ghetto." Also, the band Fishbone put out a 4-song Christmas EP back in about 1988 called "It's A Wonderful Life" that had some cool songs on it. "Call Me Scrooge" is pretty self-explanatory, and there was a really funny song called "Slick Nick, You Devil You" about Santa being drunk and stealing all the kids presents.

(all right you Chipmunks! Ready to sing your song?
-I'll say we are!
-Yeah!
-Let's sing it now!
Okay, Simon?
-Okay!
Okay, Theodore?
-Okay!
Okay, Alvin? Alvin? ALVIN!
-OKAY!!!)

Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys and time for cheer
We've been good, but we can't last
Hurry Christmas, hurry fast
Want a plane that loops the loop
Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.

(Okay fellas get ready.
That was very good, Simon.
-Naturally.
Very good Theodore.
-Ahhh.
Ah, Alvin, you were a little flat, watch it.
Ah, Alvin. Alvin. ALVIN!
-OKAY.)

Want a plane that loops the loop
I still want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.

(Very good, boys
-Lets sing it again! Yeah, lets sing it again!
No, That's enough, lets not overdo it
-What do you mean overdo it?
-We want to sing it again!
Now wait a minute, boys
-Why can't we sing it again?
-[chipmunk chatter]
Alvin, cut that out..Theodore, just a minute.
Simon will you cut that out? Boys...)

This is not exaclty a rocker, but it's still a great song!

not a "rocker" but always one of my favorites

Run:

It was December 24th on Hollis Ave in the dark
When I seen a man chilling with his dog in the park
I approached very slowly with my heart full of fear
Looked at his dog, oh my God, an ill reindeer
But then I was illin because the man had a beard
And a bag full of goodies, 12 o'clock had neared
So I turned my head a second and the man had gone
But he left his driver's wallet smack dead on the lawn
I picket the wallet up then I took a pause
Took out the license and it cold said "Santa Claus"
A million dollars in it, cold hundreds of G's
Enough to buy a boat and matching car with ease
But I'd never steal from Santa, cause that ain't right
So I'm going home to mail it back to him that night
But when I got home I bugged, cause under the tree
Was a letter from Santa and all the dough was for me

D.M.C. :

It's Christmas time in Hollis Queens
Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens
Rice and stuffing, macaroni and cheese
And Santa put gifts under Christmas trees
Decorate the house with lights at night
Snow's on the ground, snow white so bright
In the fireplace is the yule log
Beneath the mistle toe as we drink egg nog
The rhymes you hear are the rhymes of Darryl's
But each and every year we bust Chrsitmas carrols
(Christmas melodies)

Run-D.M.C. :

Rhymes so loud and prod you hear it
It's Christmas time and we got the spirit
Jack Frost chillin, the orchas out?
And that's what Christmas is all about
The time is now, the place is here
And the whole wide world is filled with cheer

D.M.C. :

My name's D.M.C. with the mic in my hand
And I'm chilling and coolin just like a snowman
So open your eyes, lend us an ear
We want to say

Run-D.M.C. :

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
