I'm having trouble getting over who i thought was love of my life.

I stumbled on Toy Caldwell's "Midnight Promises", and man, that song just grabbed me!

I loved her, and still do, but time goes on. This song helps me heal, sung only the way Toy could, with help from Gregg Allman::

Midnight promises don't mean a thing, especially in the early morning light.
Midnight promises don't make the church bell ring, midnight promises don't mean a thing.
Midnight promises all sound the same, say I love you, so you'll play the game.

Translated from Spanish to English

There stands the flower in the vase
on the nightstand beside us
it means nothing of love anymore
your eyes do not sparkle like the moon in the waves
your arms are lifeless when we embrace

Every time I hear "trouble no more" I always think of my ex-wife and LOL.

(I'm guessing some of these responses are not exactly what you had in mind. sorry.)

"Broken" by Cross Canadian Ragweed

Ain't it true what they say
Every dog has his day
I never had mine
I guess it was time
Send me on down the line
One piece at a time

She got her way
I bet it made her day
Through me off to the side
Took me out for a ride
Kicked me down to the curb
Now for all that it's worth
I'm lookin' to find
One that's broken like mine

Chorus:
Broken like mine
Or some piece of mind
I'll be happy when I find
A love less unkind
Broken like mine

I wish I was in her shoes
With nothin' left to lose
Carry myself down
To the lonely side of town
Tell her just how I feel
I need something now that's real
Don't you tell me that love is blind
A heart ain't got that kind of time
Unless it's broken like mine

Music is the soundtrack for my life. I've had the two intertwined for so many years it's impossible to separate them. Whipping Post is my Allman Brothers song of choice when things are going downhill.

I remember a girl breaking my heart and the silly Phil Collin's song "One More Night" just wouldn't get out of my head; it seemed to describe my pathetic mood at the time.

But I learned a valuable lesson when it happened again.

The Rolling Stones can help.

Jack Flash and the boys don't wallow in heartbreak, and they won't let you do it either. They're professionals in this department, and they've been doing it for years. With them, you're in good hands. No whiny "I'm nothin' without you babe" stuff here...just empathy, some sneering posturing and the urge to carry on.....much like Jimi Hendrix in Red House; "If my baby don't love me no more...I know, her sister will".

It's all good. They know as guys we get sentimental and they'll allow it {Ain't Too Proud To Beg}, but they'll keep your manhood intact too. These guys have a song called "If You Can't Rock Me {Somebody Will}"

Remember...she may have ripped out your heart.. but you can grow a new one eventually; just don't let your testicles wither or it's harder to get through this period, and you'll end up under the next chick's thumb.

If SHE rejected the situation, then SHE's missin' out...I can tell, I'm a good judge of BB character.

Stones song recommendations not mentioned above;

Some Girls, No Expectations, Dead Flowers { a favourite F YU more eloquent than the usual tripe rock bands write}, Under My Thumb, Love In Vain{Robert Johnson song}, and many many more...these guys have some attitude, and they'll share it with you while you rebuild.

As evidence of their ability to understand the plight of other guys, I leave you with this song from their "It's Only Rock N Roll" album, a little ditty entitled;

Short And Curlies

Too bad she's got you by the balls
You can't get free at all
She's got your name
She's got your number
You're screamin'
Like thunder
And you can't get away from it all
It's too bad, she's got you by the balls
You can't break loose at all
She's got your name
She's got your number
You're screamin' like thunder
And you're trapped like a rat in a hole
It's too bad, she's got you by the balls
She's nailed you to the wall
Oh, it's a shame
A but it's funny
She crashed your car
She spends your money
And you can't get away from it all
It's too bad, she's grabbed a handful
And you can't get away from it all
It's too bad, oo, and it's painful
And you can't break away from this stall
And you can't get away from it all
It's too bad
She's got you by the balls
She's got your name
She's got your number
You're screamin' blue murder
And you can't get away from it all
It's too bad, she's got you by the balls
It's too bad, she's got you by the balls
It's too bad, she's got you by the balls
She's got you by the...
It's too bad, it's too bad
It's too bad, it's too bad
So sad, so sad

Black Hearted Woman (three of them)

Black hearted woman, canít you see your poor man dyiní.
Canít count on both hands, babe, all the lonely nights Iíve been cryiní.
Well Iím tired of all your slippery ways, I canít take your evil lyiní.
Oh, no.
Black hearted woman, cheap trouble and pain is all you play.

Some time thinking Iíll be much better, if I was stiff down in my grave.
No, I just canít stay.
Yesterday I was your man, now you donít know my name.
Yesterday I was your man, now you donít know my name.

Well Iím going out to find a new way babe, oh, to get back into your

One of these days, Iím gonna catch you with your back door man.

abbohiofan, I've heard that Toy Caldwell song, Midnight Promises. I know that I like the tune of the song, and also Toy's vocals, but I never much cared for the lyrical content. I don't really remember the song now, but I remember the song seemed a little sleezy, the whole idea of the physical act cementing a relationship. I don' think that is the way to solidify a relationship. And there are songs that I can't listen to. I always have to turn off It's Too Late by Carol King. The lyrics go: "It's too late baby, now it's too late, though we really did try to make it. Something inside has DIED and I can't hide it.....I can't fake it." This seems pretty cruel on a human level, cruel like the human attention span, the human heart. I also have mixed feelings about songs like You're No Good. A song like that sung by Linda Ronstadt feels good at first, but I think we know better than to put a blanket label on a person. But yes, it seems that some people are No Good. Anyway, sorry about the loss in your life. Personally I always take a bit of pride that I loved anyone at all. It doesn't happen very often that I actually love someone. I think the best thing to do is to focus on anything else and to forget the person the best you can. Try to be at a point to where you can let someone new into your lfe.

Ok, I hope this was not too much of a GIRL response, as I am not a Girl, anyway, hope this helps. Your post seemed pretty sincere and all.

"Watching girls go passing by
It ain't the latest thing
I'm just standing in a doorway
I'm just trying to make some sense
Out of these girls go passing by
The tales they tell of men
I'm not waiting on a lady
I'm just waiting on a friend

A smile relieves a heart that grieves
Remember what I said
I'm not waiting on a lady
I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend

Don't need a whore
I don't need no booze
Don't need a virgin priest
But I need someone I can cry to
I need someone to protect
Making love and breaking hearts
It is a game for youth
But I'm not waiting on a lady
I'm just waiting on a friend "

They aren't the best lyric writers...Robert Hunter of Grateful Dead fame gets that imho...but they hit the mark.

Many of us feel like we have been there...best of luck to you in Ohio!

Wow, thank you all for your always interesting, sometimes humorous, and entertaining responses. I'll get over her, for sure, but it'll take time.

I think I'll also adopt "Black Hearted" as anthem as well.

i too am having the same problem as you. i've been back and forth with this girl so many times i can't count any more. i've given her more chances than she deserves but she still can't or refuses to get her act together. the line that sticks in my head is from harry nilsson's "you're breaking my heart"
"you're breaking my heart!
you're tearing it apart"
SO F#@K YOU!!!"

never a truer sentiment was spoken.

Well, I'm not quite as brutal as that.

I'm sticking with "Midnight Promises'. the song speaks to me. I feel she deceived me-I was thinking I was in love with her, but she just wanted a set of arms to hold her. She told me she loved me, and i told her I loved her. i meant it-she didn't.

She ended up running off with a minister(go figure), but , honestly, I still love her, and i know she'll be back. The fact that i wish she'd comew back says it all.

I feel she'll be back.

i know the exact feeling. 2 and 1/2 years together and i still feel love for her too but she cheated on me, i took her back and she cheated again. how many times can you play the fool? her marriage ended because she cheated on her husband. past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior. move on brother - as much as you want to go back move on. there are too many good women looking for good men. just remember that it's always darkest just before the dawn......

All I see are faces, a sea of faces
Surrounded by the memory of life before insanity
Hard to explain the hunger, if you don?t feel it
What I really need is your breath raining on my skin

And I?m so tired, tired of feeling sorry for myself
And I want more

All I feel are clouds, surrounded by clouds
Yesterday?s anger is the sadness of today
Our lives were filled with summer and laughter
Now are smiles are grey
Once I held you close, now my thoughts just drift like the wind

Can you feel it, can you feel it
Can you feel it, can you feel it
Coming down

And I?m so tired, tired of feeling sorry for myself
And I want more, got me wanting more
Night keep falling, and the wind keep calling my name

All I see are faces, a sea of faces
Surrounded by the memory of life before insanity
Hard to explain the hunger, if you don?t feel it
What I really need is your breath raining on my skin

Through an act of divine intervention, I put the tape of "Midnight Promises" into the cassette player on Dad's car yesterday. Had to borrow his car for something. Anyhow, the tape player on his '96 Buick destroyed the tape. I was pissed at first, but then got to thinking, "That's enough of that song".

ok......this one struck a bunch of chords during the whole 14 year relationship i've recently severed....and still does......

u2 - One

Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you
Now you got someone to blame

You say
One love
One life
When itís one need
In the night
Itís one love
We get to share it
It leaves you baby
If you donít care for it

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without

Well itís too late
Tonight
To drag tha past out
Into the light
Weíre one
But weíre not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other
One

Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come tor raise the dead
Havew you come here to play jesus
To the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now itís all I got <-----alternately you can sing (at the top of your lungs) NOW I AIN'T GOT SQUAT
Weíre one
But weíre not the same
We hurt each other
Then we do it again

You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I canít be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should

One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers

One life
But weíre not the same
We get to carry each other
Carry each other

One

One.

there is also a zepplin song.....

I don't know how I'm gonna tell you
I can't play with you no more
I don't know how I'm gonna do what mama told me
My friend the boy next door.
I can't believe what people saying
You're gonna let your hair hang down
I'm satisfied to sit here working all day long
You're in the darker side of town.
And when I'm out I see you walking
Why don't your eyes see me
Could it be you've found another game to play,
What did mama say to me.

way back when I was in college, I wrote the music column for the school paper. In the week my gal Louise broke up with me, I decided to write about the Yardbirds, using two of their songs for the article title....

"Louise, I ain't got you".......

Cheers

This Dylan ditty summed up the end of a tumultuous relationship ..... especially the very last verse -

God....but it WAS a drag to see that guy when he'd show up at the most awkward times....following me around after I started dating someone new...and the very best....cruising by my parents house on my wedding day....

You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that's winning

You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt
Why then don't you show it

You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with

Do you take me for such a fool
To think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with

You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"
But you don't mean it

When you know as well as me
You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once
And scream it

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I'd rob them

And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand
It's not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you
