Ok... I've been playing guitar roughly 20 years now. I still can't read sheet music and probably never will. That being said, I can play they typical blues scale good enough that I can fool some people to think I'm an ok player.

I'm playing along w/ Brown Eyed Woman and it sounds like they typical blues scale, but there's some subtle differences where Jerry goes. Alot of his songs sound like they start off in the blues scale and then he goes off on a different scale.

Can someone dumb down to my level what he's doing? Is there some other scale I can learn that isn't going to require ritalin and hours on end to learn?

You should ask this in the shop talk forum. There are dudes there that could probably tell you every scale Jerry used in every song.

try a dickey scale on say, a song like not fade away. just like the blues scale exept on the b string go 1-2--4 instead of just 1---4. and it hepls to play in the treble pick-up. as for like adark star scale, i would have no idea. that stuff is so nuts.

Yeah, I know what you're saying about the dickey style. I've really worked to pick up his easier licks. Now for his advanced parts, it'll take me years and years. I guess it doesn't help that I play acoustic only... haven't played an electric in almost 10 years!!!

I've been playing a while...I can talk your language..I think.

Jerry uses a scale for Darkstar...a song in the key of A....that goes like;

Low E; fith fret seventh fret.
A; fourth fifth seveth
D; " " "
G: fourth sixth seventh
B: fifth seventh
E fourth fifth seventh.

I don't know what it's called...mixolydian is a mode he uses in the scale....I have guitar magazines and I have taught myself stuff over the years....but I have never typed it out. In person, I could show you leads to a few Jerry songs.

What he likes to do, and it's the essense of true muscianship, is have a part of the solo in one scale using certain notes, and have the music force it to drop and add a different note or two as he moves though the solo, then change back....Eyes has this, and it's my favourite song for that effect.

I'm tired so I hope this makes sense.

Nah, some of that sounded stupid.

"essence of true musicianship"...what a moronic thing to say.

Good luck with this thread guys, hopefully someone coherent will come along...

...but the odds say it's not likely.

Musicalbeds...

Is this what you're trying to say:

http://midnightdruggist.com/c_major.htm

If I can learn those scales, then I can figure it out?

And does each key have a different scale?

Damn, for someone who has played as long as I have, I should be ashamed of myself.

Nah, learning takes time.

Teaching yourself is a lifelong experience...

Those scales are the answer. Try the scales in the correct key..which ever one fits, go with it.
