Simply superb show tonight! Chuck sitting in (in town rehearsing with the Stones) really elevated the band whom were in great spirits and had a fine night at the office. Jack Pearson was stellar as well and did a great job in Warren's absence. Ron Holloway provided a really different contrast with his Sax. Nice and tasteful and never overbearing. A really fun night. That Southboung KILLED as did the Jessica. This band definately still has IT.

Glad you enjoyed it. Knowing what I saw in Rosemont and seeing your setlist come in song by song, thanks to Cujo, I was ecstatic for you! We got Jessica and WP, but you had Mr. Leavell on Jessica! OMG.....................

I hope when Warren comes back they don't make up for lost time by playing too much from Hittin the Note. I like the old stuff.

Chuck Leavell blew me away!! An legendary member if you like piano...the man can play. His solos were spectacular, especially on Jessica, and Liz Reed.

The sax sounded awesome as well, and Greg's voice was in fine form.

But...that's the good stuff.

There was bad too....especially since, generally, I hate surprises. They're usually bad in my experience.

I drove two and half hours to see the show, picked up friends and dropped them off. Two hours home. I don't do that for many bands on a work night..I'm a musician and I've seen a 130+ concerts as well so I can afford to be choosy now and see bands if the night is right. I've seen the ABB a few times..this was my fifth time.

But the ABB are special...like Grateful Dead which is no more. Dickey leaving hurt, but I really liked Hittin The Note so I endured...Haynes is awesome, I've liked him since I first saw him in 1991, and he's the reason I'm still interested...the guitar angle keeps me faithful and he's good enough to keep my attention.

So...on to the bad.

First off, I didn't know Warren wasn't going to be there....that bummed me out. I still woulda gone, but a little notice woulda been nice. I realised it before they announced it, and guessed it was Jack filling in. He did well...but Warren is the man to me.

Secondly, the lawn seating was closed....no one could go on the grass. I heard from security more than once that it was the band's idea. Apparently the lawn tickets, the cheapest ones...sold out yet the pavilion ones didn't. So the band didn't wanna play to empty seats with everyone on the lawn, so they had the Amphitheatre close down the area. I don't know who's **** in' idea that was, but I had last row, far right cheap tickets...I was plannin' on dancin' on the grass, so I was PISSED OFF to say the least.

Thirdly, the sound was crap where I was...dead centre in the last section before the lawns. You could feel the bass shakin' the place, but you couldn't hear the notes. The sax and piano solo sections for Liz Reed weren't very loud...the sound was "mushy" for the first half of the show.... you could kinda tell they were playin' well, but it wasn't a great mix. It did get better...Stormy Monday is where it noticeably started improving. I guess the surprise addition of Chuck made it tough to get a mix down right away.

Lastly, I really like the new stuff...Rockin' Horse, Desdemona, Instrumental Illness...they've got some great new music that I wanted to hear and none of it was played. Dickey would have to return for me to go see a "greatest hits" concert of old stuff.

So for me...the concert was mixed blessings. A crispy soundboard or Live Release of the show might change my mind....hopefully we'll see one come out.

Chuck Leavell was just dynamite, and I was really excited by having a chance to see him play with the ABB, so I enjoyed the concert a lot more than I should have given that I don't like surprises....but when the surprise is Chuck, it certainly stacks up against a few bad experiences...I'd give the concert a 3 and half star rating, because of Chuck it jumped up from two and a half.

Except for the lawn section being closed this was an amazing performance! I agree the sound could have been a lot better, but it did improve as the night went on. If Instant Live was there they hid themselves pretty well, I couldnt find them anywhere. I know there were a few tapers in the audience so I hope one way or the other copies of this show start circulating soon!

Wow! What a killer show!
I'm still grooving this morning
Ya, the lawns being closed really sucked, but I still danced up and down the aisles.
What a trip! Well done, guys. I'm still a rock-solid fan!
Love to find out about any recordings myself...

It's my understanding that they aren't doing Instant Lives for the shows in Canada.

I appreciate your thoughtful review, musicalbeds. You were honest about missing Warren but didn't let it ruin your night, and I can respect that. I also really agree with you about the new material, and trust me, for my taste they don't play enough HTN songs even when Warren IS with them! High Cost and Desdemona in particular are classics in my mind.

I have been to more than 30 ABB shows over the years and this one is top 3!!!! Brought me back to the seventies. All you had to do was close your eyes and it felt like you were going back in time. ER, Jessica, Southbound and Leave Your Blues at Home were highlights. For as much as Warren rocks seeing Derek come to the forefront was awesome. This show was truly an ABB classic! Where I was the sound was great and you didn't need the lawn to groove all you needed was open mind, a cold beer and big smile!

Damn....I can't believe I saw Chuck Leavell last night....that was outstanding.

The problem with closing the lawns is, many people bring blankets etc. I had valuables....on the lawn that's no problem, in a seating situation it's harder to keep an eye on them.Having the extra burden of these items in a seating situation sucks to say the least.

But...this stuff can be overcome and I did overcome it, but it was a very uncomfortable show in comparison to other shows I've seen over 26 years. I had two newbie ABB fans with me, and my best friend whom I saw them with first back in 1991, and then again 1992, and all before the concert I had been raving about Warren, and how Derek and he complimented each other.

My friends had a good time...I had to make sure I keep my mood up or I would drag it down for them too, and Jack Pearson made sure I didn't have a problem, playing the Dickey-style "building solos" that the old tunes required, while Derek gave them the new "flash" that he and Warren have patented, building on Duane's powerful legacy.

Jack played a fantastic solo on Whipping Post, and as mentioned, the Southbend was indeed groovin' and awesome.

The band should release the sdbd to fans...because of the legendary Chuck's appearance...{ google his history, he's one of the piano greats!} it deserves to be perserved in the memories AND music collection of those who were there, and taper fans alike.

Damn I'm tired...is this making sense? Need the sunglasses on my emoticom/smilie this morning...

I am checking out some comments here and I have to say that I am a little disappointed. I am originally from the TO area and have seen ABB at least 15 times in the last 17 years. Recently I moved to Ottawa. For all those who have little gripes about not being able to dance due to seating restrictions, not being able to see Warren Hayes, and didn't sound just right, try to remember that some of us have to travel 6 hours to see their favourite band of all time!!!!!!!!!!!! ABB has been to Ottawa 1 time only and it was 2 years ago at Blues Fest. I had the most amazing time last night and yes did miss Warren but you had Chuck and Derek and they both rocked. Can't wait to see Derek 10 years from now!!!!!!!I don't mean to bitch but come on guys some of the complaints are just silly!!!!

I completely agree with you Dire Mule. I was up near the front and the security guards thought they were cops. That was the worst of last night. Haven't been able to make it to TO often but last night was such a treat. Derek has all kinds of talent and needed to step up. I had the time of my life!!!!! May go see them tonoight in London ON. That would be amazing. On vacation, travelling around Ontario to see family and it seems they have hit both cities I am going to. Can you ask for more?

I'm not complaining in the least. I had a ball last night!
Just thankful I had the opportunity to see the Brothers live - and it's no surprise - they rocked my world
It was also my b/f's first show, and he was equally impressed

I went to this show not expecting much. I am a huge Warren fan and I had no idea that his fill in would be so talented. I was in the 100 section, and it was fantastic down there. The sound was very clear and loud. Everybody was on there feet and you could tell the band was really enjoying the crowd. I had no idea I had seen Chuck Levell until I got home and read this board. OMG!!! Jessica with Chuck!!! This show absolutely blows away the Finger Lakes show in July. By the way, Moe was very good, and I have never heard any of ther songs before.

Silly?

Different experiences and perspectives are what make us unique.

I posted an honest opinion on the show, and you fault me for it, call it silly?

I suppose we could all accept everything the band does with no critique, but that would be lame...as a musician I know I prefer real feedback, not just a bunch of "yes-men" fans, who can't differentiate between okay and fantastic because they're scared of being negative.

I imagine that the band...good or bad reviews...feels the same.

But Del, you continue being the grateful cheerleader, because the world needs unconditional enthusiasm, and I won't lower myself to ridiculing you for it, despite your earlier comments.

Following up with Chuck Leavell, Jessica was a lay up based on the fact the keyboard part in the song is originally his. To actually hear it played as it was recorded, for me was incredible. He hit the solo bang on. Wondering how the show in London went last night??? Did anyone go????

The London show was another excellent night of classic music. Not much overlap of tunes, did get WP as the encore again. What a shame...lol. The London setlist included Dreams and Mountain Jam and Susan Tedeschi showed up to do Don't Think Twice.

Sounds like a great time, I am almost hoping to see the Jack/Halloway lineup in Scranton. Musicalbeds, sounds like your gripes are with the venue, not the band. I think the prevailing thought is that the band has almost no influence over the venue.
