That's weak. I got no pity for someone who punks out like that. I guess too much fear and loathing got to him.

For those who don't suffer from mental or emotional imbalance issues, it may well seem "weak," as you say. I heard the same sentiments expressed at the time of Kurt Cobain's demise. For those of us who have wrestled with such things on our own, it isn't so cut and dried.

I loved Thompson's writing and it has always been one of those things that has made life feel as though it is worth living. I tip my cap to the man and to the artist and hope that he is free of whatever demons drove him to this extreme measure.

Goodnight, sweet prince. Thanks for all the good times.

My God.

One of my favorite writers. His first book "Hells Angels. A True and Terrible Saga" not "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is the one to read first if you are unaware of his work. He helped create the genre known as New Journalism.

What a loss.

"Countless fans strove to imitate Thompson's startlingly candid first-person accounts that described legally errant escapades fueled by drugs, alcohol and nicotine"

i could never quite match this collection - but did have him in mind during some of my serious drug collections......

"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon. "

Killing Floor,
I admit what I said was harsh, but I've seen this from a friend. His dad ate a bullet and I watched what that did to that family. 20 years later and they're still f'd up. IMO- I believe suicide is the most selfish thing one can do. You leave while your loved ones clean the mess up.

Nice post, KillingFloor.

Absolutely. Fear and Loathing is the only one of his books I've read, but I've read some of his famous short pieces and studied a bit. (I remember being one of two people who was familiar with his writing in a Literary Journalism class, everybody else must've gotten pretty badly freaked out.) He was a total original. I guess he'll be remembered for the drugs and craziness as much as anything, but he did help to create something entirely new in journalism.
