I better give a warning. The language in drummer hell is awful. Don't listen if you may be offended .

Thanks jszfunk. I'll watch it during lunch. I saw him with Zeppelin twice. He was powerful and drove that band.

Hopefully he didnt talk to his band like Buddy Rich. Did you sample a bit of that? If I were in Buddy's band I would quit. I'd rather sell used cars that put up with that.

Have not yet..... From what I have heard, his reputation proceeds him, and not in the best of light.

No I hadn't heard of it before. Looks heavy and tense. And the blad guy clearly is based on Buddy Rich. He even mentions Buddy's name. Buddy Rich was not a nice man and he had a huge ego. Buddy also thought he was the best drummer in the history of music. Buddy tells his band on the drummer from hell link I made yesterday " I've played with the best f***ing musicians in the world!! You people are WORSE than any high school band I've ever heard".

I saw Buddy when he led his own band, all much younger men than him. I hate to say this because Buddy was not nice to his band but Buddy is the fasted and tightest drummer I ever saw. Buddy said most rock drummers leave out so much technique on the snare, high hat and don't even hold their sticks properly. Buddy did praise several other drummers in that interview including Chick Webb who died in 1939 and Steve Gadd who was younger than Buddy and is in awe of Buddy.

Technically does anyone have a drummer that can top Buddy? I am not aware of any.

Buddy is the technically best in my book. However there are tons of other drummers out there that I enjoy as well.

Mike Mangini is amazingly fast. Don't like the music of the groups I have heard him though.

If you are in to drums check out a movie called " A Drummer's Dream".

Jszfunk. I watched the John Bonham documentary last night. Enjoyed it. It explained and pointed out technical things and unique time and beat patterns that were well advanced of most drummers.

I saw Led Zeppelin twice in the 1970's and I got the impression that Bonham was probably the most advanced musician in the group.

A lot of old jazz and blues musicians, especially African Americans, claim Chick Webb was the greatest drummer ever
Even Buddy Rich said Chick was the man in those days. But I have never heard Chick do a solo. I hear his songs on YouTube and live stuff when Ella Fitzgerald was his singer at the Savoy Club in Harlem but no solos.

Of course I'm very fond of the incredible and unique sound Butch and Jaimoe got. It changed some after Marc joined on percussion. Indeed Jaimoe said Marc was playing his parts now. But instead of getting mad like alot if people would, Jaimoe said "I'll just find new parts to play".

Butch Trucks said in an interview that there are a lot of drummers that are better than Jaimoe but "Nobody does what Jaimoe does". Sometimes I put on Eat A Peach and play Standback. That is Jaimoe at his best and what he plays is incredible. Butch didn't play drums on that track. Butch played timbales and it was Butch's idea that Jaimoe play the main drum part for a change.

I always thought Jaimoes finest hour was on Sea Levels first album, especially ‘Rain in Spain’

His work on True Gravity is pretty darn good too!

Same Renaissance Man, especially Dilemma - that is some song, every musician is in top form - Jaimoe is a w e s o m e on this song

But yes as far as drummer heaven, Ginger Baker recently joined Messers. Moon & Bonham - they’re the top for me, also Mitch Mitchell, Buddy Miles, others - slamming vid, thanks pops42

I like Bobby T. Torello. Good solid drum solo. It was cool how he changed the pitch of his tom tom with his elbow.

But if you want to compare him to Buddy Rich, like every other drummer I can think of, technically, speed and dynamics it's no contest. Buddy would say Bobby has no technique on the snare, symbols, hi hat and doesn't hold his sticks correctly. According to Rich, traditional grip is how the really great drummers hold their sticks not matched grip.

Butch Truck then held his sticks wrong. Jaimoe held his correctly, much of the time. Sometimes Jaimoe was matched grip.

But here when Buddy Rich solos he goes to matched grip then back to traditional then back to matched.

But in his interviews he regularly complains rock drummers usually don't know how to hold their sticks properly so they can add to their snare, hi hat and symbol technique.

Buddy Rich was great technically and a better drummer than I will ever be. I respect his talent.
It's not all about technique, like we always mention when we talk about guitar players who are faster than lightening
Bonham was a great drummer - he incorporated a lot of jazz technique and had to have listened to Elvin Jones.
For my money, Elvin Jones and Tony Williams are among the best there ever was and would take either of them (among others) over Buddy.

Masbaa there is video on YouTube of Buddy and Ed having a friendly battle of the drummers while playing with the Tonight Show band. Johnny Carson is the host and Carson liked good drummers. I read that is why he invited the Allman Brothers on his show twice in the early 1990s.
