Got that message last night too. Would love to see this become a regular thing, or as close to regular as possible.

George was GREAT with TTB last night at The Keswick. I'm sure it won't be possible for him to play with the band permanently, but I can always dream. George Matters!

I went to last night's show only because I would've felt bad missing a chance to see Derek.

After buying the first two albums, and seeing them probably close to two years ago at the Tower in Philly, I was consistently underwhelmed by the band. Notihng they were doing -- save for a couple of songs -- was clicking for me at all.

Until last night . . .

Last night's show turned this skeptic into a believer. I don't have time to go into why right now, but painting with broad strokes, I was happy with the groove and upped tempo of the songs they played, and very happy with the amount of Derek.

I think somewhere along the lines they realized that a band called Tedeschi Trucks should be about Susan singing (and playing some lead) and Derek playing guitar. Yeah, the band is important, but those two do what those two do, and their respective known skills should be the focal point. It wasn't that way before. It was last night.

No 10 minute Derek solos, or even 2 minute Derek solos (probably), but he got good time on every song, and played GREAT fills all night. And was tight, and spot on.

I hated the slooooooowwwww burn of all their songs on the albums -- especially the live album, where I expected some energy, and got none (to my ears).

Not at all the case last night. I think only 3 songs were slow draggers (and one of those was Harlem, which I think is very good). The others did what I think a 10 piece band should do, and that rock, roll, rollick, and have good up-tempo fun.

Maybe it was my diminishsed expectations going into last night, but I don't think so. I truly ejoyed that band, and thought it was one of the great performances I've seen.

Derek is an absolute monster, and I'll tell you this much . . . for my money he never plays better than he does on "The Sky Is Crying". Every time I've heard him play that song, he absolutely KILLS it.

My first live TTB show. Their studio album was a little underwhelming for me. There were moments in the show last night that were a little down but all in all I was very impressed with them. They kept the music interesting all night. Susan is a slam dunk talent but what I was reminded of once again was that Derek is a world-class talent. Setlist anyone? - I think I missed their first song or 2.

I don't know, doesn't seem far fetched to me. I don't think any of George's other gigs pay better than TTB, and they work a lot. I could be wrong, but they could probably get George if they wanted him.

As much as I love and respect Oteil, and often defend and praise him on this site, George is a perfect fit for the Funk/R+B style that TTB is obviously going for. There is no better bass player for that kind of music in the history of the world. Why get a "George Porter-type" bassist when you can get the real thing?

"George Matters!"

Yes, yes he does

Thanks for the clip...love Derek playing w/o the slide...really cool lead and interesting interaction with Porter.

Rob,we agree...u know I'm not a fan of Oteil's playing...Porter is the real deal...he's a bass player who has the stature and chops to play up to Derek's level...

dadof2, it's not like I think Oteil is a lesser bassist than Porter. He certainly has at least as good "chops" as George, on a technical level, if not better. His work with ARU alone seals his place in the Bass Hall of Fame.

However, it seems just about beyond argument that George's style is a better fit for this particular band.

The band was even better tonight. Pulled out The Meters' "Ain't no Use", which smoked. Porter and Oteil are my favorite living bass players. I've seen both play more times than I can count and I've seen TTB a bunch over the last few years. Porter's sound is definitely more in your face and I think it works very well for this band. I still have great doubts that Porter will be onboard full-time, but it could be an amazing collaboration.

Saw the show last night 11/28 with the wife and had the pleasure of sitting next to Charlie O (one of my favs).

this band is tight. george porter jr. rocked. he locked in with the drums so well. there were times that i thought they were a latin salsa band. too bad the crowd was a sit down crowd, cause the wife and i wanted to dance, and that was just not the scene.

the wife and i have seen the band four times in the past year (njpac, elmer nj, beacon and keswick. she thought last night was the best.

some notes:
- three songs off of already free. they ripped.
- mike mattison is much more front and center
- this band shares the spotlight. i love that. they change arrangements and solos on songs. i love when derek rips on ";love has something" and last night he handed that off to the sax player.
- i loved how susan and a paired down band played angel from montgomery. this pleased the susan fans in the audience and was a great change of pace. and she ended the song with a Sugaree chorus.
- the best song of the night was the meter's song with george on vocals. that tune rocked and the whole band was just locked in.
- hung with chris trucks a little at the merch table. what a great guy.

after 4 shows in a year, i asked the wife if she wanted to give them a break. she said nope - let's keep seeing them anytime they are nearby.

George holds the bottom down, knows where to leave spaces, and his rhythms are very interesting.Oteil is fine, but never been my taste.Last I heard TTB they were a lot better.Seeing that clip, reading these reviews, and Porter's presence tell me this can possibly get very interesting.Reading that Mike is more front and center, and that Derek's playing more often...and the evolving setlist...sounds cool....

Bottom line. George Matters. I can't really explain it, but every lineup he joins becomes the groovy Dream Team.
